The Appalachian Trail- (D. 18, 11mi)

Day 18 (Fontana Dam Shelter (Hilton) -> Mollies Ridge Shelter) (176.8 mi total)

We awoke today with full bellies and clean'ish smelling bodies.  The morning was spent lazily getting packed and scouting out the Visitors center at the Fontana Dam.  We met some fellow hikers whom had their food stolen in the night by what we were told is a bear cub that recently lost its mom and has been taken in by the rangers.  After procrastinating we finally took off for what was to be our first day in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park (approx 9 million visitors a year) which is the most visited National Park in the U.S.  Until this point we had serious concern about finding water in the GSMNP but due to the relentless rainfall we hoped that we might get lucky.  The day was a long one spent mostly in absent thought walking tirelessly in the rain.  We spent the night in a very nice Smokey Mtn. shelter, freezing but still out of the rain.
Me continuing the album art for Jax and Brasky's future release.

Yeah, thanks for the warning......I won't approach them.

The beginning of what was to be a long day in the rain.

Hey, this isn't so bad!

Ha, our positive attitudes quickly subsided after arriving at the shelter soaking and freezing.  Jax still throwin' up the thumbs up though!

  2. Hey Ally,
Nice to talk to you again so soon and thanks for reading! I actually just finished the post with your family. Ha, no telling how many folks we told about yall's treehouse when we were in Knoxville. Needless, to say everyone was jealous. Hope the rest of the trip went well!
