The Appalachian Trail- (D.40, 14.0 mi)

(Watauga Lake Shelter --> Iron Mtn Shelter) (440.8 mi total)

We slept in pretty late today.  Finally around 10 a.m. a group of older couples stumbled up to our shelter and saw us sleeping......I informed them that they made us feel bad enough about sleeping in and that we would be getting up shortly.  We hit the road finally around 11'ish and made a break for Vandeventer Shelter for water and lunch.  It was here where we met Michael, a dentist from Fort Worth, Tx, and our hiking lives would be changed forever ha.  Turns out he was basically doing the same hike as us except started on July 9th.  We wondered how someone could be making such amazing pace.  "Well I average around 20 miles a day."  This left us speechless and with sore legs just thinking about such things.  His theory is sound though, he wakes up early 6 a.m.'ish and hits the trail....he averages around 2 mi/hr but he is on the trail from 7 a.m til 6 p.m.   So, regardless you are never really stressing your body (except your feet from standing so long) and still making great mileage.  So, this led us to our next day.....27 miles.
One of the system of Dam's setup in the early 1900's to provide electricity to all the wilderness areas in the valley.

I was really hoping not to run into one of these guys......Copperhead.

Watauga Lake haunts us...... but beautiful view from Vandeventer Shelter where we lunched.
